Housing First Awards $100,000 Grant to Baldwin Family Village

Fairhope, AL (December 19, 2023) – The Dumas Wesley Community Center’s Baldwin Family Village program is set to receive a $100,000 grant in partnership with local non-profit, Housing First, Inc. The recent allocation is the second funding installment of a $300,000 grant to support homeless women with children in Baldwin County. A check presentation will take place on December 19, 2023 at 2:00 p.m. at 19570 County Road 33, Fairhope, Alabama 36532. Members of the media are welcome to attend.

“The partnership between Housing First, Inc. and the Dumas Wesley Community Center's Baldwin Family Village program signifies not just financial support, but a shared dedication to creating homes where hope, dignity, and stability flourish,” said Housing First's CEO, Derek Boulware. “It is our hope through proper funding, to continue the journey toward ensuring a safe haven for those who are most vulnerable in our communities,” said Boulware.

The Baldwin Family Village is modeled after Dumas Wesley’s highly successful transitional housing program, the Sybil Smith Family Village. The program combines housing for up to 12 months, life skills classes, counseling and supportive wrap-around services designed to move a resident from homelessness to independence.

Since opening its doors in May 2023, the Baldwin Family Village has served 58 residents and carried out the following services:

• 3,556 bed nights for homeless women and children;

• 496 individual crisis prevention sessions for residents; and

• 47 life skills classes for each head-of-household in shelter.

To date, eight families have graduated successfully from the Baldwin Family Village and moved into a home of their own.
